The nights are definitely drawing in, but despite the distinct presence of autumn in the air, things are as lively as ever in the Cairngorms National Park.
This year the area plays host to a variety of events and festivals celebrating the best local food and drink alongside top traditional musicians. So fill your plates and start tapping your feet at one of these unique events…
Food and Fiddle Fortnight 2015, 2nd – 18th October
If you appreciate delicious eats to accompany your music, then visit the 2015 Food and Fiddle Fortnight which showcases the country’s finest food and traditional music. The event runs from 2nd – 18th October in a range of venues across Royal Deeside and the Cairngorms. The festival highlights the area’s rich cultural heritage, played out against a backdrop of some of Scotland’s most scenic landscapes. Sample gastronomic and musical treats, learn how local arts, crafts and foods are made, try the area’s local produce and hear world class live music.
The Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championships, 10th October 2015
Enjoying infamy around the world, The Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Competition celebrates its 22nd year in 2015. Hosted by the Highland village of Carrbridge this fun event for all the family features international chefs competing for the prestigious Golden Spurtle Trophy, awarded to the competitor producing the best traditional porridge, made from oatmeal, salt and water. There is also a specialty section open to those wanting to spice up the traditional dish with a host of mouth-watering ingredients; one of last year’s specialty winners was a sticky toffee porridge….
Glenfiddich Piping and Fiddle Championships, Blair Castle 24th – 25th October 2015
The Glenfiddich Piping Championship was established in 1974 to inspire and stimulate the world’s finest individual pipers, and to seek the best overall exponents of this traditional music. Attracting musicians from around the world, including ten of the leading international pipers, all of whom have won important awards over the years, the event is a true celebration of Scottish Music. Blair castle provides a spectacular backdrop for this thrilling musical event.
Perthshire Amber 30th October – 8th November 2015
Described as “A festival with vision and imagination…and great momentum!” the Perthshire Amber Festival has gone from strength to strength. Organiser and musician, Dougie Mclean OBE, shares his inspiring music, celebrates the history and culture of Perthshire and showcases the area’s beautiful scenery. With concerts, workshops, talks, walks and lots of free music…Open Mic, Cabaret Amber, SongBus etc taking place over the course of the festival, the streets and venues of Blair Atholl and villages across Perthshire, will be filled with a host of magical sights and sounds.
